The Greatest Show on Earth

For Christmas we asked for experiences instead of just “stuff” and my father did an amazing job surprising us with some wonderful adventures! This weekend we were off to the circus to see the greatest show on earth- Ringling Brothers! None of us had been to the circus before and it was absolutely mind blowing. I watched most of the show with goose bumps and just in awe of these performers. I know there is a lot of controversy about going to the circus, but this show did not disappoint and I am so glad we were able to have this experience together as a family.

Tennis Lessons

IMG_4852

We want to encourage the boys to love tennis without being completely overbearing so we began Carter in some very casual tennis lessons. Coach AJ has a group of little kiddos just learning some basic skills and it is adorable to watch them run around and occasionally make contact with the ball.

More From February

Even though we didn’t get much winter weather, the northern part of the county had quite a few inches of snow for a few weeks in a row. We were out of school for nearly two weeks while we waited for things to thaw and road conditions to improve. Man…that was torture haha Thankfully we were still able to get out and see our friends so at least we had company while we waited for school to reopen. You would think after all this time Atlanta could figure out how to deal with snow and ice but I guess we still haven’t learned yet!

Snowy Day

snow

Living just twenty minutes south of our old house means we don’t get to experience the winter weather quite like before. When we finally saw snow in late February (more like sleet) we bundled up and tried to play for a bit. The snow was so wet it pretty much just melted as soon as we touched it so not ideal for snowmen or snow balls fights. After getting completely soaked through in just a few minutes, we decided playing inside would be better.

Juuuuuuust enough snow for one tiny snow ball fight haha

Hello Tooth Fairy!

IMG_6896

IMG_6902

Imagine my surprise when on my way home from Disney I get a call that Carter had lost his first tooth! We set about writing the Tooth Fairy a note and making sure his tiny tooth was tucked safely under his pillow before heading to bed!

Run Disney: The Magic Kingdom

IMG_6866

We had only been running through the park a few hours before and here we were back in Magic Kingdom to take in all the rides. The lines were insane and I was getting a little frustrated having to wait so long, but we were able to ride everything we wanted to and I even managed to conquer my fear of coasters and ride Space Mountain…twice!! We went on It’s a Small World and a few other tame rides before jumping into line for Big Thunder Railroad and the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. In all honesty, Space Mountain was my favorite! I kept my eyes shut the entire time hahaha

By the end of the day, we had been awake for over 20 hours, covered more than 25 miles, and taken over 54,000 steps! I don’t think I’ve ever slept better!!! We woke up on Monday morning, packed our bags and hit the road back to reality. When we left it was sunny and high 60s. By the time we returned to Atlanta it was in the 40s and it snowed the following day! Such a difference. I also had to vacuum the minute I walked in the door, trim the boys nails, and change a stinky diaper. There was no doubt the weekend was over and our magical trip had indeed come to and end!!

Run Disney: The Walt Disney World Princess Half Marathon

Man. I love sleeping. When that 2am alarm went off it was super hard to get up but then I remembered it was race day and quickly got a move on!! Our Minnie Mouse costumes were super comfortable and after a quick glittering we hit the road to Epcot.

IMG_6609

IMG_6611

We had to wait in line for the bathrooms for close to 45 minutes and by that point we had to hustle over to the corrals to line up!! The race started t 5:30 but our corral didn’t go across the start line until well past 6:30. That’s a lot of standing around and waiting! When the fire works finally went off for us, we boogied over the start line and settled in for our loooooooooong journey. Originally our plan was to run this entire race (with stops to see the characters) and finish in a reasonable amount of time. Then, both my partners ended up getting injured so the plan changed to walking and trying our best to finish. I’ll be damned if I paid that much money and didn’t get a finisher medal so I was glad when we heard rumors that they were sweeping the course for people who couldn’t keep pace! It was a terrifying thought to have come that far and get put on a bus so I was able to convince the girls to try running in order to cover more ground. Running 13.1 miles is tough…but walking 13.1 miles is excruciating. My feet were killing me by mile 5 and by mile 7 I had to stop at the medic tent to have them tape my ankles.

I had trained hard for this race but it was still incredibly taxing on my body. We were physically exhausted by mile 8 when we got word that the “balloon ladies” were only two minutes behind us! The ladies with the balloons were keeping a 16min/mile pace and anyone who fell behind them got put on a bus and escorted off the course. The threat was real and it felt wonderful to be able to run and try to put some distance in between us and them. Again, no chance I was getting swept up!! We had come so far to not finish! We heard a bike medic start warning us to hustle and I have never seen Shari run that fast!! Another police officer was yelling that if we could just get across the bridge we would be safe. We were fast approaching an overpass on the highway and we could see it lined with police officers and three huge busses…get over the bridge was our chant and we scooted through just in time!! By the time we got to the top of the overpass and looked back, the police cars had pulled across the road and all the remaining runners were being bussed off the course. I started crying knowing that that had been the final sweep and we were safe for the last four miles. I honestly was heartbroken for those people who made it to mile 9 and didn’t get to finish. There were so many photo opportunities and it’s supposed to be a fun race, but the parks needed to open and we couldn’t be out there all day. Thankfully we were able to keep trucking along and before long the finish line was in sight!

Are we there yet???

finish

race4

I am so incredibly proud of us! Even though we knew we would have to walk most of the race and our time is nothing for the record books, we did a half marathon and we finished!!!! Not everyone can say that. I cried again across the finish line and headed straight for the ice! It was so hard to get moving again after our snack and a million pictures, but we picked up pizza and went back to the hotel to get cleaned up. It was hard to believe that the race was already over and somehow we we were done for the day! Four hours of walking managed to fly by and we survived. After getting showered and changed, we wasted no time getting back into the car and heading to Magic Kingdom. We didn’t want to waste a minute of our trip and had to make the most of our time away! We made a pit stop at the pharmacy to stock up on band aids and Advil (somehow we all managed to get blisters on our ring toe) so that we could spend a few hours on the rides in Disney World!

Run Disney: The Race Expo

IMG_6584

On Saturday the girls and I went to Panera for breakfast and then straight over to the Wide World of Sports to grab our bib numbers and race packets. We decided to wear matching clothes all weekend because we are awesome like that (hence the shirts above…) and we got tons of compliments haha

IMG_6585

The expo had lots of cool swag and race sponsors inside so we spent some time walking around and checking out all the booths. As if we needed any more reminder how small this world really is…we ran into my freshman college roommate that I had not seen in 12 YEARS!! I saw her profile as we were getting ready to leave and called her name. Low and behold she had driven in from South Carolina to run that weekend! We almost missed each other by mere seconds and I am so glad I recognized her among the other runners! It was so crazy catching up for a few minutes and of course we had to snap a picture to document the event! I joked that we look exactly the same as we did 12 years ago, just with better hair haha

Almost ready to race!!

expo

After the expo, we went to lunch at Universal and had the most amazing nachos haha We had been craving them the entire time. It was so nice to sit outside and enjoy the fresh air. Afterward we drove to 3 Wal-Marts and one Target trying to find selfie sticks and sunglasses. We ended up with an adorable pair of matching polka dot sunglasses to use at the parks after the race. All of the selfie sticks ended up being defective so that was a bust. We also bought socks to use as arm warmers because the race was going to be a lot colder in the morning than we had anticipated. Shari had the awesome idea to use mens socks and cut a thumb hole in them to stay warm. They were perfect and looked great with our costumes!! We ended up at Panera again that evening and then tucked in to get ready for race day. A 2am alarm was on the other side and we were anxious to get some rest before the big day!

Run Disney: Here We Go!

Wow! It’s been quiet over here for a while. Life is flying by and 2015 has been a bit of a blur lately. I just got back from a whirlwind weekend in Orlando to run my very first half marathon and it was such a blast! I am much less sore than I expected and jumped right back into my boot camp training. I have my sights on a few more 10ks and want to focus on getting in the best shape possible for those. This will be the first post (back dated to the day they happened in real time) documenting our Run Disney weekend extravaganza!

IMG_6536

I woke up on Friday morning to the most beautiful sunrise! It was an awesome reminder of the princess themed weekend to come and I quickly finished packing my bags and getting ready so we could hit the road. Linc dropped me off at Shari’s house and I rode with her to drop her kids off at school and pick up Nancy. The three of us snagged some bagels for breakfast and started off on our seven hour trek to sunny Florida. We made great time, stopping for lunch and gas and then straight on to our hotel. That evening we went out to Downtown Disney and were able to meet up with Kristin! Shari and Nancy each met friends for dinner and we had a huge table inside the Rainforest Café.

friday

We went to bed relatively early to prep for the race expo the next day. Our room was absolutely the smallest hotel room I have ever seen and Nancy and I shared an itty bitty bed all weekend! I slept surprisingly well though and Saturday we were up with the sun ready to take on the day!

Valentines Buddies

Year five of celebrating Valentine’s Day with our buddies the Gordons brought us to brunch at J. Christopher’s. The boys were absolutely wild and were thrilled to be together after having not seen each other for a while! It had been a busy winter and we always enjoy this chance to catch up and see our friends.
